Pangolin Dress

Collaboration with threeAsfour
2016

The Pangolin Dress is a digitally designed, 3D printed human carapace—a scale-like skin that responds to the wearer’s anatomy and motion. Geometric control and precision allows for nuanced transformations in the membrane’s porosity and flexibility. The deliberate location of these gradations produce alternating states of transparency and privacy while accommodating the movement demands of the human body. Nuanced control of material attributes, including color and flexibility, allows for precise control over the properties of inidividual scales. This is similar to the performance of biological scales, as their underlying geometry transform according to varying functional and aesthetic demands of the body.
